Minutes of Menno Area Development Meeting

July 19, 2005

The Menno Area Development Corporation held its regular meeting at the Open Door Café on July 19 with the following in attendance: Peg Thranum, Dale Weiss, Glenn Kirschenman, Darlene Mehlhaf, Wilma Liebl, Bill Headley, Larry Tolzin, Brent Haberman, Teresa Anderson, Shannon Herrboldt, Donna Zeeb, Cindy Aisenbrey, Dennis Aisenbrey, Cindy Nelsen, Nancy Larsen, Gary Jerke, and Marsha Schelske.

President Dale Weiss called the meeting to order at 12:10 p.m. DUES ARE DUE AND NEED TO BE PAID AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

The agenda was approved as presented.

Weiss explained that we lost money on the carnival this year and will need to do fund raisers to make up the loss. Last year we did fund raisers before the carnival, so we had the money. Larry Tolzin made a motion to approve the June 21 minutes and the July finance report. Cindy Aisenbrey seconded, all present in favor.

Nancy Larsen stated the Hutchinson County Commissioners would add SEFP to their budget for next year. SEFP will have a booth at the Turner County Fair on August 15-18.

Representative Gary Jerke was a guest at our meeting today. He complimented us on the phenomenal job we are doing. He feels his job is to assist us with any idea we have to make it happen. He shared some of the things he has done and is doing to keep business in the small community. He has a list of ideas to improve business in the community, etc. He will speak with Ralph Marquardt about the improvements that need to be done to Highway 18 and will continue to work for better cell reception.

Committee Reports: The web page report is in the packets. The page continues to be updated as Liebl receives information. We received 1,592 hits this month.

Monday, July 25 at 7:30 p.m. has been set as clean-up night at the Menno Motel. All members are encouraged to attend.

Discussion was had on whether to have a carnival again next year. Attendance was not good this year; as a result we won’t sponsor a carnival next year.

No report from the grocery store committee.

The car show is going to change from Peoples Choice to trophies awarded to the best in the following classes: Street Rod, Mopar, Ford, GM, Foreign, Pre 1960, Truck, Motorcycle, Modified, & Peoples Choice. Both bars were asked for a donation of $100 for trophies. Ideas for fundraisers are to have a raffle for an embroidered coat advertising the Menno Car Show. The winner would be able to pick the color and size. The FFA boys will be in charge of a watermelon feed to raise funds to off set our losses from the 4th of July. The barrel train will run,  “Cruizen Tunes” will be on “Main” Street, and there will be an alley dance.  The fire department will serve food like they did last year, as will the museum, and Rainbow Bridge will serve popcorn.

Some concern has been expressed about liability for the alley dance. After much discussion, Wilma Liebl made a motion not to sponsor a Spiking Permit for the alley dance. Brett Haberman seconded, all present in favor; motion carried.

Our next meeting will be August 16 at the Open Door Café at 12 noon.

Larry Tolzin made a motion to adjourn at 1:10 p.m. Teresa Anderson seconded, all present in favor.

Respectfully submitted,

Peggy Thranum, Secretary
