Minutes of Menno Area Development Meeting

September 19, 2006

 

The Menno Area Development Corporation held its regular meeting at the Open Door Café on September 19 with the following in attendance: Peg Thranum, David Bender, Wilma Liebl, Darlene Mehlhaf, Larry Tolzin, Brent Haberman, Shannon Herrboldt, Bruce Anderson, Dorothy Harnisch, Morna Anderson, Bill Headley, Donna Zeeb, Ken Bertsch, Michael Hecht, Jerry Nusz, Marsha Schelske, Glenn Kirschenman, Brenda Edelman, Nancy Larsen, Teresa Anderson, Cindy Aisenbrey, and Dennis Aisenbrey.

 

Board member David Bender called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m.

 

Bruce Anderson made a motion to approve the agenda with the following addition: Fence at motel. Wilma Liebl seconded, all present in favor; motion carried.

 

Larry Tolzin made a motion to approve the minutes of the August 15th meeting and the September finance report. Shannon Herrboldt seconded, all present in favor; motion carried. Thranum reported 66 entries for the Car Show for a total of $330. The trophies cost $384.49 and advertising was $63.78. Menno State Bank gave $150 in Menno Money that was used for prizes and the Community Club gave $200. A big thank you to both for their continued support; it is greatly appreciated.

 

Committee Reports: Grocery Store – Dave Bender reported the committee is waiting for information from Shurfine and they haven’t gotten back to us yet. The committee is also working on different proposals for property. The committee will meet again next week.

 

Car Show – Shannon Herrboldt reported we might make some class changes for next year. The firemen and museum reported good food sales. The number of entries was similar to past years. The date will remain the same, the 4th Saturday in August. Discussion was had on holding a poker run in the spring of the year.

 

Congregate Housing – No report.

 

SEFP Report: Nancy Larsen announced plans are being made for the 2007 Career Fair to be held in Marion on February 16. They have a lot of new, fresh ideas they will implement for the students. She encouraged businesses to make plans to attend. She has had 3 more inquires since she made out her report the beginning of September and 1 more business plan has been completed.

 

New Business: Discussion was had on installing the fence on the motel property. They will begin to dig postholes October 4 at 5 p.m. and finish the fence on October 9 at 9 a.m.

 

Larry Tolzin made a motion to contact the person from Centerville that was interested in putting up storage units on the motel lot to see if he is still interested. The board will have the authority to make the decision to sell or not. Cindy Aisenbrey seconded. All present in favor except Teresa Anderson and Dorothy Harnisch; motion carried.

 

Dave Bender reported it would cost us $153 for a half page ad. Discussion was had on doing this once a quarter or having advertising member’s pay half and the corporation paying the other half of the ad. Thranum stated $1500 of the $5000 Golden West grant was requested for a shop locally advertising campaign. It could be after the beginning of the year before we know if we received the grant.

 

Our next meeting will be October 17 at the Open Door Café at 12:00 noon.

 

Ken Bertsch made a motion to adjourn at 12:50 p.m. Cindy Aisenbrey seconded, all present in favor; motion carried.
