Menno Area Development Corporation
Minutes of August 17th Meeting
President Dale Weiss called the meeting to order at 12:18 PM.
Brent Haberman moved, Shannon Herrboldt seconded to approve the agenda
Dave Bender moved, Darlene Mehlhaf seconded to approve the minutes from the last meeting with the corrections that were noted. The motion carried.
The financial report was provided. Peg Thranum was not in attendance so the report was not read. Judy Headley moved and Shawn Black seconded to approve the report and the motion carried.
Nancy Larsen presented her report and copies were provided to the members.
The housing committee had nothing to report as the last scheduled meeting did not occur. As Judy Headley stated “progress is slow”.
The details for the Menno Car Show are coming together. There should be enough judges and Shannon said that posters will be made and distributed. Trophies will be ordered and donations will be accepted for said trophies. Businesses will be approached to sponsor any trophies as they desire. There was also discussion on other advertising in the local paper and area publications.
The city did not give permission for the Burn Out Contest but this was not an event that the Development Corporation sanctioned.
New Business: A goal setting handout was presented. The Menno-Olivet Care Center is now certified for Assisted Living Care in-house and this was noted on the list provided by Dale.
We need to get ideas for the new Welcome signs. The artist/painter will be here in September and we need to give him an idea of what we would like the sign to depict. There was discussion on the landscaping around the sign once the highway project is finished. We also discussed having the opportunity to have the sign lit and the need for electrical outlets to be available.
There was an extended discussion on the Highway 18 property. When the highway project is started, we would like to have access to the extra dirt to fill in the lot and prepare it for a new building. This could be for a new business or apartment building. There would be a single 40 foot entrance off of Highway 18.
The current structure needs to be torn down and trees need to be removed. Brent Haberman made a motion to start the process to prepare the site and Judy Headley seconded the motion. The motion carried. Ken Bertsch will be instructed to send a letter to the renter that he will need to move by the end of September. We will arrange to have an excavator tear down the house. There will be very little to salvage except the furnace, air conditioner and new sump pump.
Shannon Herrboldt made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Brent Haberman seconded the motion. The motion carried and the meeting was adjourned at 1:20 pm.
